The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has taken decisive action to address indiscipline following a violent altercation during a Matchday 15 Premiership fixture. The league management issued suspensions to two players involved in a chaotic scene after the final whistle. The incident took place at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti on April 15, 2026.
The match concluded with a 2-0 victory for Ekiti Queens, but the sporting achievement was overshadowed by physical confrontations on the pitch. Teslimot Balogun of Pacesetter Queens and Busari Suliyat of Ekiti Queens were identified as the primary participants in the unsporting conduct. League officials launched an investigation immediately after the report of the disturbance.
Authorities based their disciplinary decision on a thorough review of the referee’s report and the match commissioner’s formal observations. Video evidence was also scrutinized to confirm the nature of the violence. The NWFL concluded that the behavior of both players compromised the integrity and professional standards of the women’s top flight.
Consequently, both Balogun and Suliyat have been handed two-match suspensions. These penalties are set to begin immediately, forcing the players to miss the upcoming Matchday 16 fixtures. This move serves as a clear warning to other clubs regarding the consequences of failing to control player emotions during high-stakes games.
Modupe Shabi, the Chief Operating Officer of the league, spoke out against the lack of decorum shown by the athletes. She stated that the league maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of violence or physical aggression. Shabi noted that while these suspensions are temporary, repeat offenders could face much harsher punishments in the future.
The league remains committed to ensuring the safety of all participants and fans at match venues. Future incidents of this nature could lead to indefinite bans or significant fines for the involved clubs. The NWFL continues to emphasize that professionalism must be maintained regardless of the result on the scoreboard.
