2025/2026 NWFL Super 6: Okah Fires Nasarawa Amazons Past Edo Queens in Opening-Day Clash

Posted : 08 June 2026

Nasarawa Amazons made an early statement in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six Tournament after edging defending champions Edo Queens 1-0 in a tightly contested Matchday One encounter at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The Lafia-based side delivered a composed and tactically disciplined performance to secure all three points and begin their title challenge on a strong note.

From the opening whistle, both teams played with high intensity, fully aware of the importance of a positive start in the championship-deciding competition.

Nasarawa Amazons looked particularly bright in attack, with Esther Adesoji, Faridat Abdulwahaab, Joy Igbokwe, Adaobi Judith Okah, and Imoh Jones combining well to trouble the Edo Queens defence.

Despite the reigning champions enjoying spells of possession and applying pressure, the Amazons remained compact defensively and controlled key areas of midfield, frustrating their opponents throughout the first half.

The opening period ended goalless, but the Lafia Landladies returned from the break with renewed urgency and greater attacking intent.

Their pressure eventually paid off in the 62nd minute when Adaobi Judith Okah finished a well-constructed move with composure. The forward connected neatly with a delivery from Alani Jumoke before calmly guiding the ball past the Edo Queens goalkeeper to score what proved to be the match-winner.

Edo Queens pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Nasarawa Amazons showed discipline and resilience at the back to protect their slim advantage until the final whistle.

The victory earns Christopher Danjuma’s side an important three points and provides a strong platform as they aim for Super Six glory.

Speaking after the match, Danjuma praised his players for their maturity and determination while emphasising the need to remain focused on steady improvement.

“My goal was first to qualify for the Super Six. Results in football can be unpredictable because of the technical nature of the game,” he said.

“Many of these players are experiencing the Super Six for the first time. This is a new Nasarawa Amazons team, and players like Adaobi Okah can rise to the occasion.

“We will continue to take it one game at a time as we progress.”

The experienced coach also acknowledged the quality of the opposition and paid tribute to Edo Queens coach Moses Aduku.

“I respect Coach Moses Aduku. He is a colleague from the national team, and we have worked together,” Danjuma added.

With confidence boosted by their opening victory, Nasarawa Amazons will now shift focus to a crucial Matchday Two clash against Bayelsa Queens on Monday, June 8, as they continue their Super Six campaign.
