NWFL set June 6 date for Super Six finals

Posted : 27 May 2026

For the first time in history, the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six finals will be hosted in Port Harcourt, with the 2026 season-ending playoffs scheduled to hold from June 5 to June 14.

The announcement was confirmed by the league body through Sam Ahmadu, with Rivers State emerging as host of the prestigious competition that will decide the new champions of women’s football in Nigeria.

NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the choice of Port Harcourt was influenced by the Rivers State Government’s continued commitment to the development of women’s football in the country.

According to her, the state has consistently shown support for the women’s game, including successfully hosting the league’s Annual General Assembly last October.

“We are excited to return with our flagship competition as part of our commitment to expanding elite women’s football across Nigeria,” Shabi stated.

She added that the Super Six remains the biggest event in the NWFL calendar and expressed confidence that football fans in Rivers State would provide a memorable atmosphere for players, officials, partners, and supporters.

The playoffs will feature six teams drawn from the top three sides in Groups A and B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format.

Teams that secured qualification for the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six are defending champions Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and first-time qualifiers Abia Angels.

The competition has produced different champions in recent years, underlining the growing competitiveness of women’s football in Nigeria. Rivers Angels won the title in 2021, Bayelsa Queens claimed it in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens emerged champions in 2023, while Edo Queens lifted the trophy in 2024.

Beyond crowning league champions, the Super Six will also determine Nigeria’s representative for the WAFU-B qualifiers.

The upcoming tournament in Rivers State promises intense competition as these top teams vie for continental glory. Fans across the nation eagerly anticipate high-stakes matches that will showcase the pinnacle of domestic women's football. Ultimately, the event will highlight the immense growth and talent present within the Nigerian league system.
