The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has taken a bold step toward expanding grassroots women’s football by announcing an open registration process for the 2026 Nationwide League season.
In a move designed to attract fresh participation, the league confirmed that clubs across the country can now begin preparations to join its third-tier competition, widely regarded as a breeding ground for emerging talent.
Speaking on the development, NWFL Media Director Samuel Ahmadu revealed that payment for registration will run from April 13 to June 30, 2026. Interested clubs are expected to pay a fee of ₦550,000, while teams returning from the 2025 season may also be subject to additional caution or disciplinary charges where necessary.
Further details were provided by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, who highlighted that the Nationwide division remains open to all aspiring teams, reinforcing its importance as an entry point into organised women’s football in Nigeria.
According to Shabi, the registration process will follow a phased structure. While payment closes at the end of June, the official online portal will be available between May 30 and July 10, giving clubs ample time to complete their documentation before the league kicks off in August.
The adoption of a fully digital registration system marks a significant shift for the NWFL, aimed at improving transparency, simplifying procedures, and ensuring broader access for clubs nationwide.
Clubs have also been provided with key materials, including licensing guidelines and player registration requirements, as part of efforts to streamline the onboarding process.
With fixtures, venues, and the full competition calendar set to be unveiled soon, the NWFL’s latest initiative signals renewed commitment to strengthening the foundation of women’s football and creating more opportunities for teams at the grassroots level.
