2025/2026 NWFL Match Day 8: Heartland Queens Stun Unbeaten Bayelsa Queens with Ruthless Comeback

Posted : 20 February 2026

Heartland Queens FC produced a scintillating second-half display to hand league leaders Bayelsa Queens FC their first defeat of the season in a pulsating Match Day 8 clash at the Dan Anyiam Stadium on Thursday, Feb. 18.

In what lived up to its billing as a Grade A encounter, the high-tempo contest delivered drama, tactical battles, and moments of individual brilliance as the Owerri-based side rallied from an early setback to secure a statement 3–1 victory.

The visitors drew first blood in just the second minute when Olabiyi Alaba capitalized on a defensive mix-up at the back, latching onto a loose ball before calmly slotting past the onrushing goalkeeper, Amarachi Atulayo, to silence the home crowd.

That early setback ignited Heartland’s attacking rhythm. The hosts began to dominate possession, building patiently from the back and stretching Bayelsa’s defensive shape with incisive passing combinations.

Their first real breakthrough appeared to arrive when Umujiaku Oluebube turned home Emmanuella James’ teasing cross, only for the assistant referee’s flag to rule the effort offside.

Undeterred, the home side maintained territorial advantage and sustained pressure in the final third.

Their persistence paid off in the 27th minute. Oluebube, once again at the heart of the action, showed composure inside the box to drill a low, powerful finish beyond Agatha Thompson after being picked out by Chimebere Opara, restoring parity at 1–1.

The remainder of the first half evolved into a tactical chess match, with Heartland dictating the tempo and probing for openings, while Bayelsa looked dangerous on the counter.

Heartland’s dominance translated into a decisive lead in the 59th minute.

A goalmouth scramble ensued after Oluebube’s fierce volley was cleared off the line. Birthday girl Victory Odalumen reacted quickest, forcing the issue with a follow-up effort that bundled both goalkeeper and ball over the line, completing the comeback and sending the home supporters into raptures.

With momentum firmly on their side, Coach Obi Ogbala’s disciplined and compact unit tightened their defensive organization while continuing to threaten in transition.

Oluebube, a constant menace to the Bayelsa backline, capped a stellar individual performance in the 71st minute.

After drawing multiple fouls in dangerous areas, she unleashed a thunderous strike from range that took a deflection off former teammate Prisca Nwachukwu, wrong-footing Thompson and nestling into the net for 3–1.

While Bayelsa coach Ogbonda White introduced four substitutions in a bid to wrest back control, Heartland remained tactically resolute.

Ogbala’s side made only two changes, preserving structure and defensive compactness to halt the champions’ winning streak.

Despite the defeat, Bayelsa Queens remain top of the NWFL standings, while Heartland Queens consolidate fourth position with a morale-boosting triumph that could reshape the title race narrative.

Next up, Heartland Queens face a stern away test with a trip north to take on Adamawa Queens FC as they look to build on this momentum-shifting victory.
