NWFL Match Day 3: We are the better side, says Coach Ogbala

Posted : 30 November 2023

Heartland Queens FC of Owerri claimed the first Oriental derby against the hard-fighting Abia Warriors in Match Day 3 of the Nigeria Women's Football League (NWFL), winning 2-1 at the Enyimba International FC Stadium in Aba.

The Owerri landladies drew first blood, finding themselves in the lead when midfield maestro Oluchi Okwara scored the curtain-raiser with a stunning finish in the 48th minute after lashing onto a rebound ball from Chiwendu Orji's attempt.

The hosts fought back at the restart, evening the scores at 1-1 in the 54th minute through a controversial goal by Damilola Adebayo.

However, the celebration of the equalizing goal was short-lived as the Owerri Landladies' talisman, Mary Lucky, scored the match-winner with a perfect header in the 57th minute, restoring the lead thanks to Chinyere Iheoma's brilliant cross.

A crucial chance to further equalize from the spot was created in the 80th minute when the referee pointed to the penalty spot for an infringement in the Owerri landladies' box.

But the equalizer was denied by the smart shot-stopper and goalkeeping sensation of Heartland Queens, Uchenna Chukwu, who expertly saved the penalty kick, leaving the final scores at 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

An elated gaffer of the Owerri side, Ogbala, said the clash lived up to its pre-match billing as a local derby, insisting that the better side won the matchup.

Heartland Queens will now host Confluence Queens in a matchday 4 clash on Wednesday, December 6, at the hallowed ground, Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
