NWFL Championship: Survival at Stake as Relegation Playoffs Take Centre Stage

The battle for survival in the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship reaches its climax on Thursday as four clubs compete in decisive relegation playoff matches at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

With only two places available in next season's Championship, every match carries enormous significance. The winners will secure their status in the second-tier league, while the defeated teams will drop to the NWFL Nationwide League.

Following the conclusion of the group stage, First Mahi Babes, Gallant Queens, Fortress Ladies and Chosen Generation Angels now have one final opportunity to preserve their Championship status.

The opening fixture will see First Mahi Babes take on Gallant Queens in a contest between two teams eager to bounce back from disappointing group-stage performances.

First Mahi Babes finished bottom of Group A after losing all three matches against DreamStar Ladies, Rosaria Victrix and Delta Babes.

Gallant Queens also struggled in Group B. They opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Moje Queens before consecutive defeats to Pelican Stars and Ikukuoma Queens sent them into the relegation playoffs.

Their previous meeting at last season's Championship adds further intrigue, with First Mahi Babes edging Gallant Queens 1-0 thanks to Chidera Okechukwu's winner.

The second playoff match will feature Fortress Ladies against Chosen Generation Angels in another high-pressure encounter.

Fortress Ladies finished at the foot of Group C with one point from three matches. Despite producing encouraging performances, they managed only a draw against Unification FC before defeats to Wazbak International Sports Academy and Rangers Women FC.

Chosen Generation Angels enter the contest with experience in similar situations. The Ogun State club successfully retained their Championship status in the 2024 edition after defeating Kaduna Queens 1-0 in the relegation playoff.

This season, they lost to Imo Striker Queens and Ghetto Tigers before earning a goalless draw against Kwara Ladies to keep their survival hopes alive.

With no margin for error, Thursday's playoffs promise intense competition as all four clubs fight to extend their stay in the NWFL Championship.

Victory will secure another campaign in the division and keep promotion ambitions alive, while defeat will bring the disappointment of relegation to the NWFL Nationwide League.

As the curtain falls on the survival battle, the four teams will be determined to produce their best performances, knowing that only victory will preserve their place in the NWFL Championship for another season.
