The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) management has officially announced the dates and venues for the 2025/2026 Championship season. The competition is scheduled to take place from September 11 to 21, 2025, across two host cities in Abia State: Umuahia and Abiriba.
This year’s edition features 17 participating teams, divided into four groups. Matches in Groups A1 and A2 will be hosted in Umuahia, while Groups B1 and B2 will compete in Abiriba.
Only the winners of each group will earn automatic promotion to the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season, making every match crucial.
The NWFL emphasized that the Championship remains a vital pathway for ambitious clubs aspiring to reach the top tier of women’s football in Nigeria. With only four promotion tickets available, there is no room for error, ensuring drama and competitiveness until the final whistle.
Beyond promotion, the Championship also serves as a showcase for rising talents hoping to attract scouts, coaches, and national team selectors. For clubs, it’s an opportunity to strengthen fan bases and secure sponsorships, while host communities benefit economically from the influx of teams, officials, and supporters.
Hosting the tournament in Umuahia and Abiriba is especially significant for Abia State, known for its rich football culture. Fans will enjoy direct access to high-quality matches, while the dual venues ensure balanced logistics and wider community engagement.
As anticipation builds, the question remains: will established sides like Sunshine Queens and Pelican Stars dominate, or will emerging challengers such as Unification FC and Chosen Generation Angels pull off surprises?
The answers will begin to unfold when the 2025 NWFL Championship kicks off on September 11, setting the stage for 10 days of thrilling football action.
