Nwabili pledges to reciprocate Chippa's backing received during AFCON

Posted : 28 February 2024

Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili expressed gratitude for the remarkable support shown by Chippa Boys owner Siviwe Mpengesi during his standout performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) with Nigeria. Despite wishing to repay this support by staying with Chippa United for at least another two years, Nwabili acknowledged the likelihood of receiving better offers and leaving.

Mpengesi publicly declared his support for Nigeria and Nwabili during the Afcon semifinals against Bafana Bafana, a gesture that deeply moved the goalkeeper. Nigeria won the match 4-2 on penalties, with Nwabili earning the man of the match award after crucial saves in the shootout. Despite the loss in the final to Ivory Coast, Nwabili remains appreciative of Mpengesi's encouragement.

The goalkeeper recounted Mpengesi's messages, expressing disbelief at the chairman's support for another country ahead of his own. Nwabili expressed a desire to work for Mpengesi for an additional two years, emphasizing the chairman's kindness. However, he acknowledged the possibility of receiving tempting offers that might lead to his departure.

Regarding transfer rumors, Nwabili clarified that he has not received any concrete offers and dismissed online speculations. He emphasized his commitment to working harder, recognizing his role as a role model after gaining fame from his Afcon heroics. Nwabili addressed rumors of threats after Nigeria's victory over Bafana Bafana, stating that if such threats existed, he wouldn't be present, attributing the rumors to emotional reactions.

Chippa United is set to face FC Ravens, an ABC Motsepe League team from Eastern Cape, in the Nedbank Cup round of 16. The dates and venues for the round of 16 games are yet to be confirmed by the league.
