The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have inaugurated a seven-member Welfare Committee to support the Super Falcons as they prepare to defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
The committee was constituted following a strategic meeting between the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, and NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, in Abuja.
NFF Executive Board member, Aisha Falode, will chair the committee, while Ruth David has been appointed secretary.
Other members are Rt. Hon. Margaret Icheen, Babagana Kalli, Emeka Iyama, Aderonke Tinuoye, and Tobechukwu Oluchi.
Olopade said the initiative reflects the Federal Government's determination to provide a conducive environment for the Super Falcons to focus solely on football during the tournament.
According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, are keen on ensuring a successful title defence by the nine-time African champions.
"The President and the First Lady are fully committed to the success of the Super Falcons in Morocco. The committee is expected to work closely with the NFF to ensure a smooth and distraction-free campaign for the team," Olopade said.
He stressed that player welfare remains a critical factor in achieving success at major competitions, noting that the committee would help address welfare-related concerns promptly throughout the championship.
Sanusi described the development as a landmark initiative for women's football in Nigeria, noting that it is the first time such a welfare-focused committee has been established for the senior women's national team ahead of a major international tournament.
"This demonstrates the growing attention being given to women's football by the NSC and the NFF. It is a positive step that will further enhance the development of the women's game in Nigeria," he said.
The NFF General Secretary added that the committee's role is not to duplicate existing responsibilities but to provide additional support structures that will contribute to a seamless and successful WAFCON campaign for the Super Falcons.
Nigeria's Super Falcons will head to Morocco aiming to retain their continental crown and further extend their dominance in African women's football.
The establishment of the Welfare Committee highlights the commitment of the NSC and NFF to ensuring the Super Falcons are fully supported throughout their WAFCON campaign. With player welfare receiving increased attention, Nigeria will be hoping to create the ideal environment for a successful title defence in Morocco.
