Posted : 19 December 2025

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has paid tribute to Super Eagles icon Ahmed Musa for his remarkable dedication and service, as the celebrated forward officially retires from international football after a stellar 15-year career.

Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, hailed Musa as a symbol of commitment, humility, resilience, and patriotism. “Ahmed Musa embodies everything that is admirable about representing Nigeria. For 15 years, he wore the green and white with pride, inspired generations of young footballers, and delivered on the biggest stages,” Olopade stated.

Musa holds the record as the most capped Super Eagles player and Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, achievements that underscore his consistency and excellence throughout his career. The NSC expressed gratitude for his selfless service and wished him success in the next chapter of his journey.

Making his international debut in 2010 at just 17 years old, Musa quickly rose to prominence, representing Nigeria at every level, including the U-20, U-23, and senior national teams. He finished his career with an unprecedented 111 international appearances, leaving a lasting legacy in Nigerian football.

Throughout his career, Musa collected numerous accolades, including the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, a silver medal at AFCON 2023, and a bronze medal at AFCON 2019. At youth level, he also won the WAFU Nations Cup in 2010 and the African Youth Championship in 2011.

On the global stage, Musa scored four goals at the FIFA World Cup, making him Nigeria’s top World Cup goalscorer. He is one of only two African players, alongside Roger Milla, to record two braces in World Cup history and ranks as the third-highest African goalscorer in World Cup tournaments.
