The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced that it will approve the official Flag Football Federation for Nigeria, with elections for new executive members set to follow immediately after the federation’s inauguration.
The Commission clarified that no existing association, national or international, is currently recognized to represent Nigeria in any international flag football competition. Furthermore, the NSC emphasized that no group or organization holds official authority to act on behalf of the country in this sport.
In line with its statutory mandate, the NSC reiterated that only the Commission has the legal power under Nigerian law to recognize, approve, and regulate any sports federation, including those for flag football.
Speaking on the process, the Director General of the NSC said: “The National Sports Commission is currently engaging all stakeholders in flag football regarding the finalization of a unified national federation. NSC values the contributions of all groups and is committed to an inclusive governance structure that aligns with international standards and Nigeria’s sports development objectives. The process of recognition is ongoing, and no decision has been finalized.”
The NSC reassured athletes, coaches, organizations, and international partners that the forthcoming Flag Football Federation will be founded on principles of transparency, inclusiveness, and global best practices, ensuring Nigeria is properly represented in international competitions. The Commission will release further details on the election timetable, membership requirements, and transitional arrangements in the coming days.
