The National Sports Commission (NSC) has endorsed the forthcoming Legends Football Game, which will bring together former Nigerian internationals and celebrated African football icons in Lagos on November 8, 2026.
The exhibition match will take place at Onikan Stadium, also known as Mobolaji Johnson Arena. It will feature 15 former Super Eagles players from Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 generations against 13 African football legends.
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade described the initiative as an important opportunity to honour players whose achievements helped shape Nigeria’s football history. He said their performances earned international recognition for the country and inspired generations of young footballers.
Olopade said the Commission welcomed efforts to preserve the legacy of former players and help younger fans understand their contributions to Nigerian football.
“We cannot celebrate our football legends enough. The global recognition and positive image they brought to our country through their achievements cannot be quantified. They inspired generations of young Nigerians and continue to serve as role models for aspiring footballers,” Olopade said.
He also commended the organisers for creating a platform to recognise the former players as ambassadors of Nigeria. The Commission’s endorsement highlights the importance of celebrating sporting achievements and preserving the country’s football heritage.
The match will commemorate the achievements of Nigeria’s celebrated football generation of the mid-1990s. That era included the Super Eagles’ 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, their appearance at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the historic Olympic gold medal won at Atlanta 1996.
Nigeria’s Olympic victory remains one of the country’s most memorable sporting achievements. The team defeated Argentina 3-2 in the final to become the first African nation to win Olympic football gold.
Former Super Eagles stars expected to feature include Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George, Victor Ikpeba, Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal, Benedict Iroha and Alloy Agu.
The event is being organised by TopTier Sports Management in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) through its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme. It was officially unveiled in Lagos on September 9, 2026.
Beyond celebrating football history, the initiative forms part of CANEX WKND 2026, which promotes Africa’s creative and cultural industries. Organisers also aim to highlight the relationship between sports, entertainment and economic opportunities for African talent.
The gathering will give fans an opportunity to reconnect with some of the players who helped establish Nigeria as a major force in African football. It will also honour the wider contribution of African football legends to the development and international reputation of the game.
