NPFL Warns Clubs Over Disparaging Match-Officiating Comments

Posted : 01 October 2026

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has warned clubs, coaches, and officials against making public statements capable of bringing the league and its match officials into disrepute.

The warning followed growing concerns over public comments on officiating, with the league reminding all EuroMatch-NPFL clubs to use established channels when raising grievances.

Dr. Ayo Abdulrahman, the league’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), said the advisory was necessary to protect the image of the NPFL and safeguard its commercial and partnership interests.

In a memo titled “Warning Against Disparaging Statements by Club Coaches and Officials,” Abdulrahman drew the attention of club leadership to provisions of the NPFL Framework and Rules 2026/2027 dealing with incendiary public statements.

The memo made particular reference to a trending video interview involving Sporting Lagos coach Jeffery Buter following his side’s Matchday 6 encounter with Barau FC in Lagos.

According to the memo, comments made during the interview questioned the integrity of the centre referee and underscored the need for clubs to channel complaints through the appropriate mechanisms.

Abdulrahman reminded clubs that the NPFL Secretariat provides official channels for communicating concerns relating to match officiating.

He cited Appendix B, Rule 7 and Section A, Rule 5.5.2 of the NPFL Framework and Rules 2026/2027, which prohibit public criticism and disparaging statements against the league and its officials by players, coaches, and club officials.

The COO therefore urged clubs to ensure that their coaches, managers, and other officials comply strictly with the provisions of the league’s regulatory framework.

He warned that any further breach would attract appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the NPFL Framework and Rules.

The directive comes as the 2026/27 NPFL season enters another competitive phase, with officiating continuing to generate debate among participating clubs.
