The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will take a break starting Sunday, April 28th, after matchday 32, to allow the 2022 champions, Rivers United, to complete their six outstanding games, which have accumulated due to their involvement in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The secretary of the NPFL Club Owners Association, who also serves as the chairman of Sporting Lagos FC, Godwin Enakhena, made the statement.

He stated that the decision was made in the best interest of the league.

"The decision to postpone other matches to allow Rivers United to play their outstanding games was made by the league managers, and we all support it," Enakhena remarked.

"The club owners didn't need to push for it because it was the right thing to do, and it was done.

"Don't forget that this is a crucial stage of the league," Enakhena emphasized.

"The NPFL board led by Gbenga Elegbeleye has a very challenging task, and they are doing their best to ensure that we have a league we can all be proud of, but they are facing human challenges, and so far, I would give them a passing grade."

After hosting league leaders Enugu Rangers on Sunday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium and visiting neighboring Bayelsa United next week, Rivers United will play against Remo Stars, Katsina United, Niger Tornadoes, Abia Warriors, Kwara United, and Sunshine Stars before the league returns to its full schedule.

The Pride of Rivers, who were eliminated from the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup by defending champions USM Alger, are currently 17th on the table with 34 points from 24 matches.

Enakhena also mentioned that the club owners and the league body aim to clear Rivers United's backlog of matches, among other issues related to the league's broadcast rights.

"We have issues that need addressing; some of them involve outstanding matches that have not been played.

"The economy is a major factor; we all know it's affecting many things, but we are committed to finishing the league as planned. And this is the final stretch of the league. So, we need to review certain things before we proceed, to avoid any disputes."

After matchday 32, it remains to be seen how the last six rounds of matches will fit into the initial timeframe, as per the league calendar, with the 2023/24 season scheduled to end on June 9th.
