NPFL Super 6 Preseason Tournament Begins in Jos Ahead of New Season

Posted : 19 August 2026

The 2026 NPFL Super 6 invitational preseason tournament begins on Wednesday at the New Jos Stadium in Plateau State. The six-team competition will run from August 18 to 23 and is designed to give Nigeria's continental representatives valuable preparation.

The tournament is being organised by the Nigeria Premier Football League with support from the Plateau State Government. It brings together clubs preparing for the 2026/27 NPFL season and the upcoming CAF inter-club competitions.

NPFL champions Rangers International headline the field after securing the 2025/26 league title. Rivers United, who finished second, are also involved as they prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign.

Federation Cup champions El-Kanemi Warriors complete the main group of continental representatives. Shooting Stars were initially expected to participate, but they have been replaced by Katsina United for the Jos tournament.

Plateau United and Mighty Jets are the other invited teams. Plateau United will have the advantage of playing at the New Jos Stadium, while Mighty Jets will get the opportunity to test themselves against some of the country's leading clubs.

Rangers secured the NPFL title on the final day of last season after defeating Ikorodu City 2-1 in Lagos. Rivers United finished runners-up despite recording a 3-0 victory over Katsina United on the same day.

Shooting Stars finished third in the NPFL and were originally included because of their CAF Confederation Cup qualification. El-Kanemi Warriors earned their continental place by winning the 2026 President Federation Cup.

The tournament comes at an important stage of preparation for the clubs involved. The CAF inter-club competitions are scheduled to begin in September, giving Rangers, Rivers United and El-Kanemi Warriors limited time to build match fitness and assess their squads.

Rangers, Rivers United and Shooting Stars have already featured in the ValueJet preseason tournament in Ikenne. The Jos competition gives El-Kanemi Warriors additional competitive preparation after not taking part in that event.

The NPFL has also encouraged Nigeria's continental representatives to prepare early after the country's clubs struggled to make a major impact in recent African competitions. The Jos tournament is therefore expected to provide useful competitive tests before the CAF campaigns begin.

For the participating clubs, the six-day event offers an opportunity to assess new signings, improve tactical organisation and build fitness. It will also give coaches a clearer picture of their squads before the 2026/27 NPFL season gets underway.
