NPFL reschedules Bendel Insurance, Sunshine Stars over robbery attack

Posted : 10 December 2023

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has rescheduled the Match Day 13 encounter between Bendel Insurance FC of Benin and Sunshine Stars of Akure, following the armed robbery attack suffered by the Akure Gunners.

Gunmen attacked the team bus of Sunshine Stars Football Club along Ore-Benin Expressway at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, injuring some officials and a crew member as the team was on their way to honor the match against Insurance.

The match was initially scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 9, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. It has now been moved to Sunday, December 10, 2023, due to the unfortunate incident.

The change in the fixture is outlined in the circular issued by the Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi.

The shift is intended to allow the affected Sunshine Stars to recover from the psychological impact of the attack.

Meanwhile, the Bendel Insurance FC management team, who visited the affected team at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), expressed disappointment with Nigeria's system that has allowed insecurity, banditry, and armed robbery to thrive in the country.

They prayed for the quick recovery of the affected Sunshine Stars officials, particularly the curator who was shot.

The kick-off time for the rescheduled match between Bendel Insurance FC and Sunshine Stars is 4 p.m. at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin on Sunday, December 10, 2023.
