NPFL Releases 2025/26 Season Fixtures as Remo Stars Face Rivers United in Opening Clash

The management of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has released the official fixtures for the 2025/26 season, setting the stage for an exciting campaign as clubs learn their opening day opponents.

 

Defending champions Remo Stars will face former league winners Rivers United in the headline fixture of the opening weekend, scheduled to run from August 22 to 24.

 

The draw ceremony, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, was graced by ex-international players who assisted in picking the ballots in a colorful event.

 

Speaking before the draw, NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye highlighted the league’s growth in popularity during the previous season. He attributed this rise in followership in part to the return of several Super Eagles players to the domestic league.

 

“There was a significant increase in attendance at our matches, and our league gained more popularity with the return of ex-internationals like Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and Shehu Abdullahi to Kano Pillars, Brown Ideye to Enyimba, and Godwin Obaje to Rangers, among others,” Elegbeleye said.

 

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, representing NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, expressed the federation's satisfaction with recent league developments. He specifically praised the adherence to the season calendar and revealed that plans are underway to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the NPFL. He added that some Nigerian referees were recently sent to Morocco for VAR training.
