NPFL: Rangers Beat Bendel Insurance 1-0 to Strengthen League Campaign

Posted : 06 November 2026

Enugu Rangers moved to the top of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance in their rescheduled Matchday Nine encounter on Wednesday.

The defending champions claimed all three points at the Awka Township Stadium, with defender Chidozie Iwundu scoring the decisive goal shortly after the restart.

Both teams struggled to break the deadlock during an evenly contested first half. However, Rangers needed just two minutes after the interval to take the lead.

Iwundu found the back of the net in the 47th minute, giving the Flying Antelopes an advantage they successfully protected until the final whistle.

Bendel Insurance attempted to respond but could not find an equaliser as Rangers maintained their defensive organisation to secure their sixth league victory of the campaign.

The result was particularly important for Rangers, who entered the encounter knowing that victory would take them above Rivers United at the top of the standings.

According to reports, the rescheduled fixture was initially scheduled for October 18 but was postponed to accommodate Rangers' participation in the CAF Champions League.

The victory takes Rangers to 21 points from 10 matches, giving them a three-point advantage over Bendel Insurance, who remain on 18 points from 11 games.

Rivers United, who previously occupied the top position, have 18 points from 11 matches following their 1-1 draw against Rangers on November 1.

The result strengthens Rangers' early title defence as they seek to retain the NPFL championship under head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu.

Bendel Insurance, meanwhile, will be disappointed to have missed the opportunity to move level with the league leaders. The Benin-based side had recorded consecutive victories over Rivers United and Kwara United before Wednesday's defeat.

Rangers will now turn their attention to their next league assignment against Kwara United on Sunday, November 8, as they look to consolidate their position at the summit.

Bendel Insurance will return to Benin City to face Niger Tornadoes as they seek an immediate response.
