NPFL players to earn minimum ₦2m monthly as NSC, NFF unveil sweeping reforms

Posted : 26 June 2026

The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have announced a landmark reform package that will see every player in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) earn a minimum monthly salary of ₦2 million from the 2026/2027 season.

The initiative forms part of an ambitious drive to improve professionalism, strengthen player welfare, and reposition the NPFL as one of Africa's leading domestic football competitions.

Under the new policy, no registered player in the top flight will receive less than ₦2 million per month, marking a significant increase in earnings across the league.

The move is expected to improve players' living standards, boost morale, and encourage more talented footballers to build their careers within Nigeria.

Beyond the revised salary structure, the NSC also introduced an enhanced financial reward system for clubs competing in the league.

The champions will receive a record prize package, while clubs finishing in other positions will benefit from a performance-based distribution model designed to improve financial sustainability across the competition.

Although the exact amounts for clubs finishing between fourth and twentieth positions are yet to be announced, the Commission assured stakeholders that every participating club will receive financial support based on its final league standing.

The reforms are aimed at addressing persistent challenges such as poor player welfare, salary delays, and inadequate club funding, while creating a more competitive and commercially attractive league.

Football stakeholders have applauded the initiative, describing it as a major breakthrough capable of transforming the domestic game.

They believe the improved welfare package will help retain quality players, reduce the exodus of young talents to lesser leagues abroad, and raise the overall standard of the NPFL.

The new salary framework and financial incentives are scheduled to take effect before the start of the 2026/2027 NPFL season, signalling what many believe is the beginning of a new era for Nigerian club football.

The sweeping reforms reflect a renewed commitment to strengthening the domestic league through improved welfare and sustainable club financing. If successfully implemented, the measures could significantly enhance the competitiveness and long-term growth of the NPFL.
