NPFL Orders 3SC to Relocate Home Matches Over Lekan Salami Pitch Condition

Posted : 01 February 2026

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has directed Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) to relocate their home fixtures away from the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan after declaring the pitch unfit for league action.

The league’s decision followed an inspection that raised serious concerns about the quality of the playing surface, with NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye describing the turf condition as “embarrassing” during a radio interview this week.

As a result, 3SC has been instructed to choose between the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta or the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos for their upcoming home games until the situation in Ibadan improves.

In response, the Oluyole Warriors admitted that the pitch had deteriorated but attributed the situation largely to the harsh effects of the ongoing dry season. The club assured stakeholders that urgent steps were already being taken to restore the surface to acceptable standards.

In a statement released on Saturday, club management revealed that remedial work had commenced, including intensified turf maintenance, grass treatment, levelling, and consistent watering of the surface.

3SC emphasized that the efforts were aimed not only at quick recovery but also at ensuring long-term sustainability of the pitch in line with safety and broadcast requirements.

“Shooting Stars SC remains fully committed to providing a safe, professional, and broadcast-friendly playing environment that reflects the club’s history and status in Nigerian football,” the statement noted.

The development comes at a delicate time for the Ibadan-based side, who are enjoying a strong campaign and currently occupy sixth position on the NPFL table with 35 points from 23 matches.

The club had been scheduled to host league leaders Rivers United in a Matchday 24 clash on Sunday, but the game was postponed due to Rivers United’s involvement in the CAF Champions League.

It is yet to be confirmed when or if the NPFL will approve a return to the Lekan Salami Stadium once the ongoing repairs are completed.
