NPFL: NFRA Seeks Preventive Measures Against Referee Attacks

Posted : 01 November 2026

The Nigeria Football Referees Association (NFRA) has urged organisers of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), state football associations and participating clubs to strengthen security measures to protect match officials from attacks.

The association said preventive measures were necessary to address growing concerns over incidents involving referees, club officials and supporters during and after league matches.

Acting NFRA President, Sir Kelechi Mejuobi, said stakeholders must prioritise proactive security arrangements rather than rely on sanctions after match officials have suffered attacks and injuries.

He condemned the recent incidents in which referees were allegedly assaulted by unruly supporters and officials, describing the trend as a threat to the development of domestic football.

Mejuobi acknowledged the sanctions imposed by the NPFL on offending clubs but stressed that stronger preventive measures remained essential to safeguard referees at match venues.

“While the association acknowledges the punishments meted out to offending teams where referees are attacked, proactive measures to ensure the protection of match officials should be sacrosanct.

“Let's see what can be done to prevent attacks on referees rather than punishment after the victims must have suffered harm and injuries as a result of such actions,” he said.

He expressed hope that the league's sanctions would deter future misconduct while calling for closer collaboration among stakeholders to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The NFRA also assured that referees appointed to officiate league matches had been directed to uphold fairness and firmness in accordance with the Laws of the Game.

It urged match officials to remain worthy ambassadors of the profession by adhering strictly to the Laws of the Game and competition regulations.

The association added that it was engaging relevant authorities and exploring internal mechanisms to enhance the safety of referees before, during and after matches.

It reiterated that creating a secure environment for match officials was a collective responsibility requiring sustained commitment from league organisers, clubs, football administrators and other stakeholders.
