NPFL Lacks Quality Strikers, Says Bendel Insurance Coach Kennedy Boboye

Bendel Insurance head coach Kennedy Boboye has raised concerns over the shortage of quality strikers in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). His comments came after his side secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City on Wednesday.

The Benin Arsenal struggled to convert several chances during the Matchday 5 encounter at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. They eventually secured all three points through Chinedu Nwosu's penalty and Alex Oweiyalefa's late header after Ikorodu City had equalised.

Nwosu opened the scoring from the spot in the 50th minute after Emmanuel Dung was brought down inside the penalty area. Ikorodu City captain Farouk Salami levelled the match in the 80th minute before Oweiyalefa restored Bendel Insurance's lead four minutes later.

Boboye said his team continues to work on finishing during training but admitted that converting chances remains a problem during competitive matches. He also argued that the issue extends beyond Bendel Insurance and affects the domestic league generally.

“We don't actually have quality strikers in the league,” Boboye said while discussing the team's finishing problems. He added that coaches are often forced to adapt wide players into central attacking roles because of the shortage of natural strikers.

The coach's comments came after Bendel Insurance recorded 20 shots against Ikorodu City, with nine efforts on target. The hosts also missed opportunities that could have given them a more comfortable victory.

The victory moved Bendel Insurance to fourth position with nine points from five matches. They have recorded three wins and two defeats in the opening five rounds of the 2026/27 NPFL season.

Boboye's team had entered the match after a 2-1 away defeat to newly promoted Ranchers Bees. The win over Ikorodu City therefore restored momentum ahead of their next fixture against Abia Warriors on September 27.

Boboye said Bendel Insurance will target another three points in Aba. The result against Ikorodu City leaves the Benin club within reach of the early-season leaders as the NPFL campaign continues.
