NPFL Golden Boot Race Heats Up as Godwin Obaje Reclaims Top Spot with Braced Finish

Posted : 12 May 2026

The battle for the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Golden Boot has intensified following a dramatic Matchday 37. Rangers International striker Godwin Obaje reclaimed the top position on the scorers' chart after netting twice on Sunday. His brace secured a vital 2-1 victory for the Flying Antelopes against Bendel Insurance at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. Obaje now sits at the summit with 14 goals as the league heads into the final day.

Obaje’s performance was not just significant for the title race but also for his personal career history. His second goal against Insurance brought his career total in the Nigerian top flight to 99 goals. The 30-year-old forward is now just one strike away from the historic 100-goal milestone. Having previously won the Golden Boot in 2016 with 18 goals, Obaje is aiming to become a two-time recipient of the prestigious award.

The competition remains fierce with Ikorodu City's Joseph Arumala and Remo Stars' Victor Mbaoma hot on his heels. Arumala has been a revelation this season, consistently finding the net to keep Ikorodu City in the hunt for a continental ticket. Both Arumala and Mbaoma currently sit on 13 goals each, just one behind the league leader. Mbaoma, who returned to the NPFL this season, has been instrumental in keeping Remo Stars within the top-four bracket.

Other contenders are also mathematically in the race despite a slightly larger gap. Katsina United's Uche Collins and Wikki Tourists' Jonathan Mairiga follow closely with 12 goals apiece. The tight nature of the standings means that a final-day hat-trick from any of the chasing pack could shift the honors. Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu praised Obaje's consistency but noted that collective success remains the primary objective.

The final day of the season presents a mouth-watering script for football fans across the country. Rangers International will travel to face Ikorodu City in Lagos, setting up a direct confrontation between Obaje and Arumala. This fixture will likely decide both the NPFL title and the individual scoring crown. Obaje will seek to hit his century of goals while securing his second league title on the same afternoon.
