NPFL Deducts Three Points From Warri Wolves Over Referee Assault

Warri Wolves have been hit with a three-point and three-goal deduction, alongside financial penalties and closed-door matches, following an assault on a match official after their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter against Kano Pillars on Sunday.

The league’s disciplinary action followed a breach of the NPFL27 Framework and Rules, with Warri Wolves found guilty of failing to provide adequate security and allowing unauthorized persons into restricted areas.

According to the charges, a supporter of the Warri-based club assaulted the appointed match officials after the encounter, leaving the second assistant referee with a nose injury that caused bleeding.

The NPFL consequently imposed a ₦2 million fine on Warri Wolves for failing to provide adequate and effective security.

The club was also fined another ₦2 million for the assault on the match official, bringing the total financial penalty to ₦4 million, excluding compensation for the injured referee.

Warri Wolves must additionally pay ₦250,000 to cover the assistant referee’s medical treatment.

Beyond the financial sanctions, the Seasiders will forfeit three points and three goals from their accrued league tally as punishment for assaulting and injuring the official.

The club has also been ordered to play its next three home matches behind closed doors, depriving supporters of access to the stadium during those fixtures.

The league’s disciplinary committee further directed Warri Wolves to identify the individual responsible for the assault and provide evidence of the person’s prosecution within seven days.

The club has 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the sanctions.

The punishment represents a significant setback for Warri Wolves, who must now contend with the sporting consequences of the points deduction while addressing security failures and complying with the league’s directives.
