NPFL clamps down on Warri Wolves with heavy sanctions over Match Day 36 breaches

Posted : 06 May 2026

Warri Wolves’ fight to retain their top-flight status has suffered a major setback after the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) imposed strict disciplinary measures on the club following incidents in their Matchday 36 fixture against Plateau United on Sunday, May 3.

The league’s Disciplinary Committee found the club culpable of multiple violations of the NPFL Framework and Rules, particularly citing a failure to ensure proper security arrangements at the match venue.

This lapse reportedly allowed unauthorized individuals to access restricted sections of the stadium.

Further findings indicted the club’s supporters for acts deemed unsporting and damaging to the image of the league.

The situation escalated with misconduct directed at match officials, which led to a disruption and a 10-minute stoppage during the encounter.

In response, the NPFL handed Warri Wolves a cumulative fine of ₦6 million. The breakdown includes ₦2 million for inadequate security, ₦1 million for fans’ unruly behaviour, and ₦3 million for actions against match officials.

In addition to the financial penalties, the club has been ordered to play its remaining home fixtures behind closed doors—an outcome that could significantly impact their survival hopes as the season draws to a close.

The heavy sanctions imposed by the NPFL serve as a stern reminder of the league's commitment to maintaining discipline and security at all venues. For Warri Wolves, navigating the final hurdles of the relegation battle without the support of their home fans will require a monumental effort.
