2025/2026 NPFL Season: Elegbeleye Advocates ₦1 Million Minimum Wage for Players

Posted : 05 January 2026

Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has outlined an ambitious vision for the domestic top flight, advocating a ₦1 million minimum monthly salary for players as part of broader reforms to professionalize the league.

Elegbeleye’s long-term goal is to transform the NPFL into a competitive, credible, and commercially viable league, capable of retaining top local talents, attracting private investors, and ranking among Africa’s elite domestic competitions. Key areas of focus include improving refereeing standards, enforcing stricter discipline, increasing live television coverage, and aligning the league calendar with international football schedules.

Central to his agenda is the salary proposal, which he believes will enhance players’ welfare, improve their quality of life, and reduce the outflow of Nigerian talent to lower-tier foreign leagues. Elegbeleye stated, “Better pay will not only improve player welfare but also strengthen the credibility, competitiveness, and marketability of the NPFL.”

He acknowledged financial challenges faced by state-owned clubs, emphasizing the need for private investment, commercial partnerships, and expanded broadcast reach to support wage reforms. Discussions on implementing the ₦1 million minimum wage are ongoing, with a phased approach expected in consultation with clubs and stakeholders.

Despite these challenges, Elegbeleye remains optimistic that sustained reforms, improved governance, and enhanced commercial opportunities will position the NPFL for long-term growth and stability.
