The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has expressed strong support for the recent expansion of the Nigeria Football Federation Congress. He believes this strategic change will significantly strengthen the foundation of domestic football. The reform introduces a more inclusive governance model that directly links on-field success to administrative influence.
Under the new guidelines approved by the NFF, the top-tier league will now command 10 delegates within the Congress. Five of these positions are specifically reserved for the clubs that finish in the top five spots of the 2025/2026 season. This move ensures that the most successful teams have a direct say in the future of the sport.
Elegbeleye described the shift as a major opportunity for the league to integrate more deeply into national football decisions. He noted that giving clubs a stronger voice is a necessary step for the growth of the game. The Chairman emphasized that this development fosters a sense of belonging among the primary stakeholders of the Nigerian league.
The expansion also extends to the lower divisions of the Nigerian football pyramid. Both the Nigeria National League and the Nigeria Nationwide League One will receive two delegate slots each. This broader representation aims to create a balanced system where various levels of the sport are heard.
The NPFL boss highlighted that the new voting system acts as a reward for consistent performance. Only the highest-ranked clubs will earn the right to participate in the upcoming electoral process. Elegbeleye suggested that this creates an extra layer of motivation for teams to excel throughout the grueling season.
Modernizing football governance remains a priority for the current administration. Elegbeleye believes these reforms align Nigeria with international best practices. The goal is to make the system more performance-driven rather than purely administrative.
As the NFF prepares for its elective congress later this year, these changes will likely impact the leadership results. Clubs now view success on the pitch as a gateway to influence off it. This era marks a transition where trophies and voting rights go hand in hand for ambitious Nigerian teams.
