As the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) reaches its final stages, with three more games to go, the chairman of the league board, Gbenga Elegbeleye, has assured that the season will conclude without any hitches.
Although Remo Stars have already clinched the league title, the NPFL boss stated that he and his colleagues are aware of the ongoing battle for continental tickets and survival from relegation. As a result, they will remain vigilant until the final day of the season.
Honourable Elegbeleye, a former Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Sports in the House of Representatives, hinted that the board will be on alert to guard against any antics from teams fighting to avoid relegation and those aiming for a continental ticket.
"At this stage, I would say clubs are in a desperate mood to escape relegation, while some are desperate to qualify for continental football.
"We know that many antics will be deployed by clubs to possibly manipulate matches in their favor, but my message to the clubs and Nigerians is that we are up to the task.
"It’s no longer business as usual. Whatever tactics they bring, we know how to block all loopholes now. We are certain we will run a very seamless and smooth league until the last day (Matchday 38)," said the politician-turned-sports administrator.
The former Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) expressed appreciation to Nigerians for recognizing the board’s efforts and for believing in them.
"I want to tell Nigerians that our best is yet to come. We are just growing, and we will continue to improve with every opportunity until we give Nigeria the best league in Africa."
