NPFL 2026/27: Shooting Stars Overcome Inter Lagos in Thrilling Season Opener

Shooting Stars SC began their 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign on a winning note on Friday, defeating newly promoted Inter Lagos 2-1 in an entertaining Southwest derby at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

The encounter provided an exciting curtain-raiser to the new NPFL season, with both sides displaying attacking intent before the more experienced Shooting Stars eventually secured all three points.

Lucky Emmanuel Gyang opened the scoring in the 11th minute, becoming the first player to find the net in the 2026/27 NPFL season.

The early breakthrough gave the Oluyole Warriors the initiative, but Inter Lagos quickly settled into the contest and restored parity through Adigun Damilare in the 22nd minute.

The equaliser lifted the visitors, who were making their return to the country's top flight after earning promotion, and ensured a keenly contested encounter.

Shooting Stars, however, regained the advantage before the interval and went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

The Ibadan-based side showed greater composure after the restart, managing the game effectively despite Inter Lagos' attempts to find another equaliser.

The victory represents an encouraging beginning for Shooting Stars, who face a particularly demanding season ahead as they combine their domestic campaign with continental football in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The coach and players will take confidence from the result as they seek to build momentum in the early weeks of the NPFL season.

For Inter Lagos, the opening-day defeat will be disappointing, but their response after conceding early and their ability to restore parity offered positives for a side embarking on its first full campaign among Nigeria's elite.

With both teams showing enough attacking quality to trouble opponents, the Southwest derby provided an entertaining start to the 2026/27 NPFL season, while Shooting Stars' experience ultimately proved decisive in securing the opening three points.
