2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 23 Review: Nasarawa United Settles for Draw Against Enyimba

Posted : 29 January 2026

The Solid Miners once again dropped two crucial points after a series of missed opportunities, including a first-half penalty miss by Sam Pam, as they shared the spoils with visiting Enyimba FC on Matchday 23 at Lafia City Stadium.

Nasarawa United entered the game riding the momentum of two consecutive wins but fell agonizingly short of reclaiming the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League summit on Wednesday evening, settling for a 1-1 draw against the nine-time league champions, Enyimba FC of Aba.

Determined to secure four points from the Aba Elephants following their first-leg point in Aba, Nasarawa United dictated the tempo with aplomb. Youngsters Benjamin Jack and Habibu Alakija both struck the upright before left-back Sam Pam missed a penalty in the 44th minute, awarded for a foul on Jofrank Istifanus. Both sides went into halftime scoreless.

However, Jofrank Istifanus’s backheel finish in the 69th minute saw him score his third goal of the league campaign for Nasarawa United, momentarily signaling a return to the top spot for the Solid Miners.

Enyimba, though, rallied with unyielding determination. A contentious penalty awarded in the 71st minute by referee Rabiu Ahmed proved decisive, as Kalu Nweke calmly converted from the spot to equalize, dashing the home side’s hopes of ascending to first place.

Nasarawa United remain second in the standings with 39 points, two points behind Rivers United, who have two games in hand, while Enyimba stay in 12th position with 28 points.

Coach Mangut Mbwas stated that “the Solid Miners would regroup and refocus on our next challenge against 13th-placed Wikki Tourists, who have 27 points, on Sunday, 1st February 2026, at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi.”
