Nottingham Forest's striker rejoins training, preparing for Premier League clash with Arsenal

Posted : 30 January 2024

Nottingham Forest received a boost as Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi rejoined group training in preparation for their upcoming Premier League clash against Arsenal at the City Ground.

Awoniyi had been sidelined since undergoing groin surgery following an injury aggravated during Nigeria's 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Lesotho. This setback had kept him out of action for thirteen consecutive matches across all competitions.

The 26-year-old, who had been a crucial figure for Forest before his injury, contributing to six goals in ten Premier League appearances, returned to full training just before the clash with Arsenal. Despite having only participated in two training sessions, there is cautious optimism about his potential return to the pitch.

Considering the limited training time, the match against Arsenal might come too soon for Awoniyi, but his reintegration into the training group signals positive progress in his recovery.

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo provided a squad update during a pre-match press conference, stating, "Taiwo, Anthony, and Felipe are back with the group. Taiwo is in the process of recovering and getting the fitness levels right. It was our decision to bring them to the group instead of waiting for them to be one hundred percent ready. Anthony made two training sessions, and Taiwo did the same. It was our decision to have them around and start being with the boys."

Unfortunately, Awoniyi's fitness issues ruled him out of the Super Eagles squad for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
