Nottingham Forest's Nuno Espirito Santo updates Awoniyi's injury pre-Everton

Posted : 20 April 2024

Before Nottingham Forest's critical Premier League encounter with Everton at Goodison Park, manager Nuno Espirito Santo addressed the media, providing an update on Taiwo Awoniyi's fitness.

The Portuguese coach mentioned that Awoniyi, the Nigerian international, has yet to fully participate in training sessions with the team ahead of the Everton match, indicating that he is still recovering from a thigh injury sustained prior to the Luton Town game.

Awoniyi has missed the last five Premier League games for Nottingham Forest due to this injury, which also led to his absence from the Nigeria national team's recent matches against Ghana and Mali.

Although Awoniyi has been involved in certain aspects of team training, Nuno Espirito Santo refrained from specifying when the striker might return to full fitness and availability for selection.

Additionally, the manager mentioned that the inclusion of Anthony Elanga in the match against Everton remains uncertain, and confirmed that Willy Boly, a winner of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, is still recovering from an injury and unavailable.

During the pre-match press conference, Nuno Espirito Santo stated, "Taiwo hasn't rejoined the group fully yet. He is still partially integrated into the team. Anthony was able to participate in some training sessions earlier in the week. We're managing his situation and will assess him tomorrow before making a decision for the game."

Nottingham Forest currently sits in 17th place in the Premier League standings with 26 points, just one point ahead of the relegation zone, with only five matches left in the season.
