Norwich, Leeds Play Out Goalless Draw in Championship Play-Offs Semifinal First Leg

Posted : 12 May 2024

In a tense encounter, Norwich City and Leeds United settled for a goalless draw in the first leg of their Championship play-offs semifinal on Sunday. The match was marked by several contentious moments, including Leeds' appeal for a penalty in the seventh minute when Willy Gnonto was brought down by Borja Sainz on the edge of the penalty area, only for the referee to wave away the claims.

The visitors thought they had broken the deadlock on the half-hour mark when Junior Firpo found the net, but the goal was disallowed due to Georginio Rutter being in an offside position during the build-up. Despite both teams creating chances throughout the match, neither side managed to capitalize on their opportunities, resulting in a stalemate at the final whistle.

With neither team able to secure an advantage in the first leg, the focus now shifts to the second leg of the semifinal, which will see Norwich traveling to Leeds on Thursday. Norwich will be aiming to break their scoring drought at home, having failed to find the back of the net for the first time since December, while Leeds will look to capitalize on their home advantage to secure a spot in the Championship play-off final.
