Norway Face England in World Cup Semi-Final Showdown

Posted : 11 July 2026

Norway and England collide today in a mouthwatering World Cup semi-final, with both nations arriving in red-hot form on the back of dramatic knockout wins over South American opposition.

Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 in their previous outing, continuing an impressive run through the tournament that has already seen them dispatch Iraq, Senegal, France, and Ivory Coast.

England, meanwhile, edged past Mexico 3-2 in a thrilling last-eight tie, adding to wins over Croatia, Panama, and Congo DR, with a goalless draw against Ghana the only blemish on their otherwise strong campaign.

Kickoff is set for 10:00 PM WAT this evening, with a place in the World Cup final on the line. Norway's route to the semis has been built on resilience, having needed a comeback against Ivory Coast and a gritty win against Brazil to reach this stage, showing they can grind out results even when not at their fluent best.

England, by contrast, have shown flashes of attacking firepower—particularly in their 4-2 win over Croatia and the high-scoring victory over Mexico—but their profligacy against Ghana is a reminder they can also go cold in front of goal.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken believes the individual battle between Erling Haaland and Harry Kane could prove decisive when his side takes on England in Saturday's World Cup quarterfinal.

Haaland has been in devastating form, scoring seven goals across his first four matches at a major tournament, propelling Norway into the last eight for the first time since their return to the World Cup stage after a 28-year gap.

Kane trails him by just one goal in the tournament's scoring charts, having reached 14 World Cup goals overall as he guides England toward a third straight quarterfinal appearance.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Miami, Solbakken acknowledged that while the matchup is officially Norway against England, it's widely understood that Kane serves as England's primary difference-maker just as Haaland does for Norway.

His counterpart, Thomas Tuchel, was brought in by the English FA specifically to push a talented generation of players past the near-misses that defined the Gareth Southgate era at previous major tournaments.

Norway's situation stands in stark contrast, given this marks their first appearance at any major tournament in 26 years—a run that has already included a stunning last-16 upset over Brazil, sealed by a late Haaland brace in a 2-1 win.

Solbakken described each knockout match as feeling like the most significant occasion in Norwegian football history, noting that this quarterfinal now represents the third time that sentiment has applied during this tournament.

He characterized his squad's mood as both relaxed and competitive, suggesting that while England may be facing greater external pressure, his own players feel the weight of expectation too—though he believes such pressure tends to fade once the match actually gets underway.

Norway's unexpected run has captured attention both domestically and in the United States, with their fans' Viking-inspired celebration becoming one of the tournament's defining images. Haaland himself has become an even bigger global draw, thanks to a combination of his scoring exploits and his relaxed, engaging personality off the pitch.

Solbakken said the entire country is looking forward to the match, adding that these kinds of nights have a unique power to unite the nation. He suggested that this current wave of excitement might be something of a one-off given Norway now appears positioned to qualify for future tournaments more regularly, following a 26-year absence from the world stage.

Adding another layer of complexity to the contest, extreme heat and humidity are expected to affect conditions in South Florida, with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. local time. Miami currently sits under a heat advisory from the National Weather Service, with temperatures feeling as high as 40 degrees Celsius.

In response, Solbakken revealed his squad has kept training deliberately light over the past three days in Miami, focusing on tactical work at a reduced tempo rather than intense physical sessions, all in an effort to stay fresh for kickoff. Both teams, he added, will simply need to adapt to the same challenging conditions.

Betting Prediction

Current bookmaker models make England the favorites, with win-probability figures giving them roughly a 50% chance of victory, compared to about 24% for Norway and just under 26% for a draw. That price reflects England's slightly greater squad depth and more consistent scoring form throughout the tournament, though Norway's habit of finding a way through tough knockout matches makes them anything but a straightforward underdog.

Given England's attacking output in recent rounds and Norway's tendency to play tight, low-scoring affairs against bigger nations, a cautious lean toward England to win, potentially in a tighter contest than their earlier group-stage romps, looks like the value angle—though a draw after 90 minutes wouldn't be a shock given the stakes involved.
