No contact from Chelle to Nwaneri before Euro U21

Posted : 23 May 2025

Nigeria’s national team coach, Eric Chelle, has not made any move to approach Arsenal's rising star Ethan Nwaneri, despite the fast-approaching 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Nwaneri, who made headlines as the youngest player to debut in the Premier League at just 15, is still eligible to play for both England and Nigeria. This dual eligibility has kept fans and analysts speculating over where his international loyalty will ultimately lie.

While earlier reports suggested that Chelle had met with the midfielder in London to explore the prospect of a switch to Nigeria, close sources have denied that such a meeting ever occurred.

According to these sources, there has been no form of communication—formal or informal—from Chelle or the Nigeria Football Federation to Nwaneri, his agents, or his family regarding a possible commitment to the Super Eagles.

With the U21 European Championship drawing near, Nigeria's failure to make an early approach could allow England to secure the talented midfielder for good, especially with reports linking Nwaneri to a possible future role with the senior England squad.

The NFF has successfully attracted dual-national talents in the past, including the likes of Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman, who have all committed to Nigeria through competitive appearances.

Nwaneri, now 18, had a breakthrough season with Arsenal, contributing six goals or assists in 25 games. Though he has previously played for England at U17 level, a senior switch remains possible, as he has not closed the door on Nigeria—but for now, he appears more inclined toward representing England.
