NNL Sets October 31 Kick-Off as Clubs Face Strict Licensing Requirements

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has set October 31, 2026, as the kick-off date for the 2026/2027 season. The league has also issued mandatory licensing requirements to the 34 participating clubs ahead of registration.

NNL Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana said clubs must comply with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Club Licensing Regulations before they can complete their registration. The requirements cover finances, contracts, governance, infrastructure, insurance and coaching qualifications.

Clubs must provide evidence that they have cleared outstanding financial obligations to players and coaches. These include salaries, allowances and sign-on fees; unresolved disputes must be settled before registration.

Clubs with financial disputes involving players or coaches must also obtain clearance from the NFF Arbitration Committee. The league has further directed clubs to submit properly executed contracts for their players and officials.

Teams with outstanding debts to the NNL must settle them before receiving clearance for the new campaign. These obligations include fines, cautions, registration fees and other outstanding payments from previous seasons.

A major financial requirement is a mandatory ₦20 million guarantee from each participating club. The provision is intended to demonstrate that clubs have the financial capacity to complete the season.

The NNL has also requested corporate documentation from the clubs. This includes evidence of incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission, shareholder details and information showing a transparent ownership structure.

Infrastructure is another major part of the licensing process. Clubs must provide suitable home grounds that meet NNL and NFF standards, including functional dressing rooms and adequate medical facilities.

Participating teams are also required to have valid insurance coverage for their players and officials. Their technical departments must be headed by coaches who hold the appropriate CAF coaching licences.

Registration for the new season is already underway. The NNL has warned that clubs that fail to meet the requirements before the stipulated deadline will not be registered for the competition.

The 2026/2027 campaign will begin on October 31, with promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) also at stake. Four clubs, one from each conference, are expected to secure promotion at the end of the season.
