The Nigeria National League (NNL) has once again taken strong action against erring clubs, with Godswill Akpabio FC of Uyo and Barau FC of Kano severely penalized for assault and intimidation of match officials.
In the case of Uyo-based Godswill Akpabio FC, the club was found guilty of assaulting match officials during their Matchday 15 encounter against Rovers FC of Calabar at the Uyo Township Stadium on April 26.
The match ended 2-2, but from the end of the first half, the home team’s officials and fans began to intimidate the match officials, and a player, Austin Ajibawo, was cautioned for physically intimidating the first assistant referee. Further assaults occurred at the end of the match.
Godswill Akpabio FC has been fined N3,000,000, which must be paid before their next match. Additionally, the club must play their next two home games behind closed doors. They will also pay N250,000 as medical bills to the assaulted match officials, and Ajibawo has been suspended for two matches. The Akwa Ibom State FA has been given seven days to identify the assailants or provide evidence of disciplinary action taken against them.
The "strict closed-doors" measure means that only 20 security personnel, seven club officials per team, 12 ball boys, 10 host FA officials, match officials, accredited medical personnel, two accredited cameramen per team, and 10 media representatives are allowed to attend the match.
In the case of Barau FC, the club committed the infraction during their home game against Gombe United at the Danbatta Township Stadium on April 26. From the first half, fans of the home team (which eventually won the match 2-0) began throwing missiles at the technical bench of Gombe United, causing injuries and leading to the match being abandoned for 15 minutes.
Barau FC has been fined N2,000,000, will pay N150,000 for medical bills to the assaulted Gombe United officials, and will also play their next two home matches behind closed doors.
