Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Gets Major Upgrade Ahead of NPFL and CAF Champions League

Posted : 19 August 2026

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu is undergoing a major renovation as the state government works to modernise the iconic venue ahead of the 2026/27 football season. The project is also aimed at preparing the stadium to meet international standards for Rangers' continental matches.

The stadium, popularly known as The Cathedral, is the traditional home of Enugu Rangers. The Flying Antelopes won the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League title and will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League alongside Rivers United.

The renovation is being carried out as part of a wider upgrade of the facility. Reported improvements include a FIFA-standard natural grass pitch, rehabilitation of the athletics track, roofing of spectator stands, improved seating, modern floodlights and a digital scoreboard. Access control and other safety infrastructure are also included in the project.

Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Lloyd Ekweremadu said the renovation, refurbishment and modernisation of the stadium are being handled by China Communications Construction Company. He added that the work is expected to be completed ahead of the 2026 National Sports Festival.

Governor Peter Mbah has also assured Rangers that the stadium renovation will be completed to international standards for the club's continental campaign. The governor made the commitment while rewarding the Rangers players and officials following their NPFL title triumph.

The ongoing work means Rangers must use another venue for their early continental fixtures. Reports in July indicated that the champions had reached an agreement to use the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, for their CAF Champions League preliminary-round matches.

Rangers General Manager Amobi Ezeaku previously said the club would assess the progress of the renovation before making longer-term decisions about its home venue. He described the government project as a major boost to the club's ambitions while assuring supporters that the team was prepared for the new season.

The renovation is also linked to Enugu's preparations to host the 2026 National Sports Festival. The state government expects the upgraded stadium to provide a modern sporting facility capable of hosting major domestic and international events.

For Rangers, the return to a renovated Cathedral would provide a significant boost after their successful 2025/26 campaign. The club will aim to defend its NPFL crown while competing for continental success, with the upgraded stadium expected to provide a stronger home base once it is cleared for use.
