NLO suspend players, officials over alleged hooliganism, assault on match officials

Posted : 07 May 2026

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has taken firm disciplinary action against several players and club officials over incidents of alleged hooliganism, misconduct, and assault on match officials during ongoing 2026 league fixtures.

In a statement released by the league’s disciplinary committee, officials and players of Rising Stars FC Jigawa were handed indefinite suspensions following disturbances that reportedly occurred during their clash against Jar Jigawa Golden Stars FC.

Among those suspended are club officials Ismail Brown and Sunusi Garba, alongside players Nasir Idris, Babangifa Aliyu, and Lurwanu Abdul. The NLO stated that all affected individuals will remain barred from league activities pending the outcome of further investigations.

The league also sanctioned Ahudiyanem FC of Abia State after alleged attacks on match officials during their game against Right 2 Win FC.

Those affected by the sanctions include the team manager, assistant coach, and players Anayo Chukwujekwu, Christopher Onu, and Emmanuel Ibeh. In addition, the club’s supporters’ group was suspended indefinitely over its alleged involvement in the incident.

As part of the disciplinary measures, Ahudiyanem FC was ordered to pay a fine of ₦500,000 before playing another match. The club chairman was also instructed to provide a written commitment assuring adequate security and protection for match officials in future fixtures.

The NLO clarified that no points were awarded to Right 2 Win FC because the match officials did not officially abandon the encounter.

Amid the growing concerns, the NLO Secretariat also appealed to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Referee Appointment Committee to improve the quality and fairness of officiating, especially in matches held in Umuahia.

According to the league body, inconsistent officiating could undermine the integrity and credibility of the competition as well as the image of Nigerian football.

The NLO further urged referees to maintain professionalism, discipline, and fairness while emphasizing the need to protect the reputation and development of grassroots football across the country.

The latest incidents once again highlight persistent disciplinary and officiating challenges in Nigeria’s lower-tier football leagues, with authorities under pressure to strengthen enforcement and ensure better conduct both on and off the pitch.

These disciplinary measures serve as a stern warning that the league will not tolerate violence or unprofessionalism. By holding both clubs and officials accountable, the NLO aims to restore order and safeguard the future of the competition.
