NLO expands reach as 2026 Season opens in Makurdi

Posted : 05 April 2026

The 2026 Nationwide League One (NLO) season is set to burst into life on April 10, with Makurdi playing host to the opening fixture in a move that underlines the league’s growing commitment to grassroots football development across Nigeria.

Rather than the traditional high-profile venues, the spotlight will fall on the McCarthy Stadium, where local sides Flight FC and NYSC FC will square off in a symbolic curtain-raiser designed to bring the game closer to underserved communities. The initiative reflects the league’s broader vision of unearthing raw talent while giving local supporters direct access to live football action.

For the NLO, regarded as Africa’s largest grassroots football league, this season signals more than just competition—it represents expansion and innovation. With a total of 46 groups already unveiled, the league has widened its footprint to cover all states and the Federal Capital Territory, reinforcing its role as a key pipeline for Nigerian football talent.

Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, expressed confidence ahead of the new campaign, highlighting the growing excitement surrounding the league.

According to him, anticipation is building rapidly as the opening match approaches, with fans eager to witness the emergence of new stars. He also confirmed that the release of full fixtures is imminent, setting the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive season.

In line with modern trends, the league has also embraced digital transformation with the relaunch of its official website. The upgraded platform is expected to enhance fan engagement, providing a more interactive and personalized experience for clubs, players, and supporters alike.

As the countdown begins, the NLO’s decision to kick off in Makurdi sends a strong message—football’s heartbeat lies not just in major cities, but in the communities where passion runs deepest.

This landmark kickoff in Benue State underscores the NLO's mission to democratize football excellence across the federation. By prioritizing local engagement and digital accessibility, the league is setting a high standard for grassroots sports management in Africa. As Flight FC and NYSC FC prepare to take the stage, they carry the hopes of countless young talents aiming for the pinnacle of Nigerian football.
