Nigerians anticipate three key goals from new Super Eagles coach Finidi George

Posted : 02 May 2024

As Finidi George assumes his role as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, he's been reminded to consider the expectations Nigerians hold for him in this position, having prevailed over tough competition to succeed Jose Peseiro.

Tasked by the Nigeria Football Federation with leading the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by overcoming challenges from teams like South Africa and Rwanda, Finidi faces an immediate test next month with crucial World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

In preparing the Super Eagles for upcoming challenges, Finidi is advised to focus on three key aspects, as outlined by former international Bright Omokaro: building a well-rounded squad capable of consistent success, ensuring players earn their place on merit, and improving the team's style and performance compared to his predecessor.

Omokaro stresses the importance of Finidi's dedication to achieving the best results for Nigeria amidst high expectations, particularly with the World Cup qualification campaign underway and all eyes on him to assemble a strong team and deliver positive outcomes.

The Super Eagles are set to resume their World Cup qualifying campaign with an eagerly anticipated clash against South Africa's Bafana Bafana, scheduled for June 2 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, promising a rematch of their intense encounter during the AFCON 2024 semi-finals.

Having triumphed over Bafana Bafana in the AFCON with a penalty shootout victory following a thrilling 1-1 draw in regular and extra time, the Super Eagles aim to replicate their success while striving to secure qualification for the World Cup after falling short of claiming the AFCON title.
