Nigerian fullback earns fourth senior call-up

Posted : 08 April 2024

Nigeria-eligible right-back, Habeeb Ogunneye, was among the academy players selected for Manchester United's matchday squad in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This marked his fourth call-up for a first-team game, having previously been an unused substitute against Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, and Everton.

The match saw Luis Díaz open the scoring in the 23rd minute with an acrobatic effort from Darwin Núñez's pass.

Bruno Fernandes equalized for the home side in the 50th minute, looping the ball over Caoimhin Kelleher from a long way out after a poor pass from Liverpool's young center-back, Jarell Quansah.

Promising English midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo, gave Manchester United the lead in the 70th minute, curling the ball past Kelleher after receiving a simple pass from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Mohamed Salah leveled the score for Liverpool in the 84th minute from the penalty spot after Wan-Bissaka fouled Harvey Elliot in the penalty area.

Despite the tense encounter, Ogunneye did not play a single minute, likely due to injuries to several key defenders, necessitating his inclusion in the matchday squad.

While it is a positive development for the young full-back to be involved with the first team, he will undoubtedly be eager to make his senior debut in the near future.
