Nigerian Defender Akin Famewo Departs Hull City to Join Bolton Wanderers on Three Year Deal

Posted : 02 July 2026

Newly promoted Championship side Bolton Wanderers have officially finalized the transfer of Nigerian central defender Akin Famewo from Hull City. The versatile 27-year-old center-back has committed his long-term future to the Trotters by putting pen to paper on a three-year contract. The tactical acquisition makes the London-born defender the third major signing for the club during the active summer window.

Famewo moves on from East Yorkshire after just a single season with the Tigers. He initially joined the Hull City squad in July 2025 as a free agent following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday. The reliable defender went on to make 17 first-team appearances across all competitions during the historic 2025/2026 football campaign. His sole goal for the club came during a dominant 3-0 away victory against Preston North End back in January.

The experienced defender helped Hull City secure their dramatic return to the English Premier League via the Championship promotion playoffs. Although he missed out on the final matchday squad against Middlesbrough, he remained a key figure on the substitutes' bench during the semifinal second-leg clash with Millwall. His departure aligns with recent financial restructuring efforts by the Hull City board to comply with strict Premier League Financial Fair Play regulations.

Meanwhile, his new employers Bolton Wanderers are also celebrating their own recent league ascension. The competitive squad secured a spot in the Sky Bet Championship after defeating Stockport County 4-1 in a thrilling League One playoff final at Wembley Stadium. Bringing Famewo into the defensive ranks injects vital second-tier pedigree into the newly promoted roster.

The physical defender brings a Wealth of experience to the Reebok Stadium setup. He has racked up 63 combined appearances in the English Championship across his previous professional spells with Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday. Bolton Wanderers will officially kick off their highly anticipated Championship campaign at home against Preston North End on August 15.
