Nigerian clubs await August CAF inter-club draws ahead of continental campaign

Posted : 23 June 2026

The quartet of Nigerian representatives for the 2026/27 CAF inter-club competitions are expected to discover their preliminary round opponents in August when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducts the draws for its flagship club tournaments.

Reigning Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions Rangers International, runners-up Rivers United, and third-placed Shooting Stars have all secured continental qualification, alongside the winners of the 2026 President Federation Cup.

Rangers International and Rivers United will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League, while Shooting Stars and the Federation Cup winners will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Reports indicate that the draws for the first and second preliminary rounds of both competitions are expected to be held during the first week of August, although CAF is yet to officially announce the date and venue.

The final list of participating clubs is still being compiled, with several domestic leagues and cup competitions across Africa yet to be concluded.

The number of qualified teams from CAF's member associations will determine the format of the preliminary rounds, including whether some clubs receive byes into the next stage.

With the new continental campaign drawing closer, Nigeria's representatives will be eager to receive favourable fixtures as they begin their quest for success on the African stage.

The upcoming draws will establish the roadmap for Nigerian clubs as they look to make a significant impact on the continent. Proper preparation and early knowledge of their opponents will prove vital for navigating the challenging preliminary phases of these prestigious tournaments. Football enthusiasts across the nation remain hopeful that this campaign will herald a deep and successful run for all four teams in Africa.
