Nigeria's Super Falcons face Cameroon in a heavyweight quarter-final at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday. The winner will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil, adding major importance to an already fierce African rivalry.

Nigeria reached the knockout stage as Group C runners-up after recovering from a 3-2 defeat by Malawi. Justine Madugu's side responded with a 1-0 win over Zambia before producing an emphatic 6-2 victory against Egypt to finish on six points.

Cameroon enter the quarter-final unbeaten. The Indomitable Lionesses defeated Mali and Ghana before drawing 1-1 with Cape Verde, finishing top of Group D with seven points. Their defensive organisation will provide a stern test for Nigeria's attack.

The Super Falcons have scored nine goals in three group matches, with Asisat Oshoala and Gift Monday among their attacking contributors. Nigeria will also rely on captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Jennifer Echegini and Michelle Alozie as they seek to control the contest and create chances against a disciplined Cameroon defence.

Nigeria's recent record against Cameroon provides additional confidence. The Super Falcons defeated the Lionesses in the 2016 WAFCON final and eliminated them on penalties in the 2018 semi-final before another 1-0 quarter-final victory in 2022. The 2022 meeting was particularly significant as Rasheedat Ajibade's goal sent Nigeria into the 2023 Women's World Cup.

The teams also met in friendly matches earlier this year. Cameroon won the first encounter 1-0 in Yaoundé, but Nigeria responded with a 3-1 victory in the return fixture. Those results underline how closely matched the rivals can be.

Nigeria's squad retains several members of the team that won the previous WAFCON title. Chiamaka Nnadozie, Ajibade, Oshoala, Echegini, Alozie, Osinachi Ohale and Oluwatosin Demehin bring significant international and knockout experience.

Ashleigh Plumptre remains unavailable after missing the tournament through injury. Madugu will therefore continue to depend on Ohale, Demehin, Alozie, Tosin Imuran and other available defensive options.

Cameroon have their own influential players, including Washington Spirit midfielder Monique Ngock. Her ability to help the Lionesses retain possession could be crucial if Nigeria attempt to dominate the midfield.

The match will take place at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca on Sunday, August 9, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm Nigerian time. The quarter-final winner will qualify directly for the 2027 Women's World Cup, while the losing teams will have another route through the WAFCON play-offs.

Nigeria's experience in major knockout matches gives the defending champions an edge, but Cameroon have shown enough defensive discipline to make this a difficult contest. A controlled performance from the Super Falcons could be enough to secure a narrow victory and another World Cup appearance.
