Nigeria has secured the hosting rights for two of the most significant events on the African football calendar. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the bid to host both the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards. This announcement follows a high-level meeting between the President and CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Ordinary General Assembly is scheduled to take place in October this year. This gathering will bring together presidents from all 54 member associations and representatives from the zonal unions. It serves as a vital platform for ratifying decisions concerning the growth of the game across the continent. The event follows the 2025 assembly which was held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The CAF Awards ceremony is expected to follow in December 2026. This marks the fifth time Nigeria will host the prestigious gala, with the last edition held in Lagos in 2017. Fans are hopeful that hosting the event on home soil will bring good fortune to Nigerian nominees.
Several Super Eagles stars are currently in the running for the Men’s Player of the Year award. Victor Osimhen remains a top contender after leading Galatasaray to a fourth consecutive Turkish Super Lig title. He will likely face stiff competition from Morocco's Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz. Diaz recently earned the Player of the Tournament award at the last Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nigerian Football Federation is already preparing for the influx of continental dignitaries. NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu were present during the approval meeting. The upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will also influence the award categories later this year.
Nigeria has a rich history with this event, notably hosting when Asisat Oshoala won her first crown. The nation remains a powerhouse in African football administration and talent. This dual hosting role further cements Nigeria’s position as a central hub for the sport in Africa.
