Nigeria to Face Russia in October Friendly at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium

Nigeria's Super Eagles will face Russia in an international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The fixture has been confirmed by Nigeria's FIFA Match Agent, Jairo Pachon of Eurodatasports, and the Russian Football Union has also announced the meeting.

The match will be the second meeting between the two senior national teams in 16 months. Their first encounter ended in a 1-1 draw at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025.

Russia took the lead in that match through a Semi Ajayi own goal in the 27th minute. Nigeria responded after the break, with Tolu Arokodare scoring in the 71st minute to secure a draw for the Super Eagles.

The upcoming fixture will give Nigeria another opportunity to test the squad against European opposition. The Super Eagles have already faced Poland and Portugal in friendlies during 2026, drawing 2-2 with Poland before losing 2-1 to Portugal.

The Russia fixture will also come shortly after Nigeria's opening matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. According to reports, the Super Eagles are scheduled to host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau four days later.

Russia's October schedule will begin with a friendly against Namibia in Yekaterinburg on October 3. The Russian Football Union confirmed that the national team will then meet Nigeria three days later in Nizhny Novgorod.

The Nizhny Novgorod Stadium has a capacity of about 44,000 spectators and was one of the venues used during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The match will therefore provide another major international setting for the Super Eagles.

The first meeting between Nigeria and Russia ended without a winner, leaving the teams level in their head-to-head record. Nigeria will now look to improve on that result when the sides meet again in October.
