Nigeria Targets Hosting Rights for 2031 African Games and 2034 Commonwealth Games

Posted : 07 May 2026

Nigeria has unveiled a bold plan to host two of the world's largest sporting events within the next decade. The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, confirmed that the country is actively bidding for the 2031 African Games and the 2034 Commonwealth Games. This announcement follows a high-level seminar in Abuja organized by the African Union Sports Council and the NSC. The initiative aims to reposition Nigeria as a premier destination for international sports.

Dikko explained that the shift in focus comes after Nigeria initially considered a bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. However, evaluators provided positive feedback on the nation's readiness, encouraging a more strategic long-term approach. An evaluation team from the African Union recently visited to inspect existing facilities. The delegation, led by Dr. Decius Chipande, assessed stadiums in regions like the Niger Delta, which Dikko noted are already capable of hosting major tournaments.

To support these ambitions, President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of the National Sports Infrastructure Development Board. This new body will coordinate the upgrade of facilities nationwide and mobilize necessary funding. The President also directed a reset of sports financing starting from the 2026 fiscal year. This policy ensures that all appropriated funds for sports are released immediately upon budget approval to eliminate bureaucratic delays.

The government views these hosting bids as a catalyst for economic growth and youth engagement. By harmonizing development frameworks with other ECOWAS nations, Nigeria hopes to create a unified sports economy. Dikko emphasized that the goal is not just about the prestige of the events; it is about creating jobs and improving infrastructure for future generations. He stressed that with proper coordination and investment, Nigeria can deliver world-class competitions that meet global standards.

The NSC is also exploring potential bids for other major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Officials believe that the current facility inspection results place the country in a strong position. By leveraging private sector partnerships and government support, the commission aims to build a lasting legacy. The successful hosting of these games would mark Nigeria's first time hosting the Commonwealth Games since its inception.
