Nigeria Survive Ghana Scare to Claim 3-2 Volleyball Victory

Nigeria’s senior women’s volleyball team survived a dramatic fightback from Ghana to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory at the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Kenya on Wednesday.

The Nigerian side looked set for a comfortable victory after taking a 2-1 lead, but Ghana responded strongly in the fourth set before Nigeria held its nerve in a tense decider to seal the crucial win.

Nigeria opened the contest on the front foot, taking the first set 25-21 to establish an early advantage.

Ghana, however, refused to be overwhelmed and responded with an identical 25-21 scoreline in the second set to draw level.

The Nigerian team regained control in the third set, producing its most dominant display of the match to win 25-11 and move within one set of victory.

With their backs against the wall, the Ghanaians raised their intensity and forced the match into a fifth set after cruising to a 25-11 victory in the fourth.

The deciding set produced the most gripping contest of the encounter, with both teams trading points in a tense battle before Nigeria eventually prevailed 18-16.

The 3-2 victory leaves Nigeria second in Group C and keeps its campaign firmly on track ahead of Thursday’s final group match against Cameroon.

The encounter against Cameroon will be another major test for the Nigerian side as it seeks to strengthen its position in the competition.

The 2026 Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship is particularly significant, serving as part of the qualification pathway for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the 2027 FIVB Women’s World Championship.

Nigeria will now aim to carry the momentum from its hard-earned victory over Ghana into the crucial Cameroon encounter.
